Why not just use Migration Assistant? I used that to transition my wife from an old PowerBook G4 to a MacMini and it was really simple. There were a few quirks since the other was such an old computer using a PowerPC chip, but it made the whole process really simple. I'm now kicking myself for not doing that when I bought my MacPro back in 2009.

Noticed that when I booted up and then I saw your post. Excellent recommendations. I used the migration assistant and everything is transferring now.

Thanks again to you both. =D

    1. Go to the nearest store and buy an external hard drive that you connect to your Macintosh. Then set up Time Machine to make backups to that hard drive. (To set it up: Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Time Machine). First, this will give you a backup of everything that is on your Macintosh which will save you lots of trouble should your Macintosh ever die. And second, it lets you transfer _everything_ on your Macintosh onto your new computer.

    2. When you buy the new Mac, when you start it the first time, it will ask you whether you want to transfer data from another computer. At that point, you follow the instructions on the screen and tell it that you want to transfer data from a Time Machine backup. You plug in the external drive, and some time later the new computer contains absolutely everything that was on the old computer. Including music.

    3. Never, ever rely on an iPod to hold your music. The first place your music belongs is the iTunes library on your computer. The next place is the backup disk. Always assume that music on your iPod is temporary and could disappear any time.

An easier thing to do would be to use Migration Assistance as per these instructions here. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413) The cheapest way to do it would probably just to buy a firewire to firewire cable (cheap on Amazon) and then follow the instructions.

No need to bother. You possess moral rights immediately upon its final form:

    When is my work protected?

Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

Besides, to be frank, it's quite probable that your design will infringe on the copyright of others.

Aye, it seems a shame to force iOS developers to update their machines (admittedly old machines, but still) to coincide with a new desktop iOS - but I guess that's the case with such a closed development environment.

It'll be a Mac Mini for me I imagine :) Still I also suspect I could run Xcode 4.0.x on a Snow Leopard machine for some time before it became a real issue...Hmmm...just timelining lol

Here is my set-up that works very well and is stable:

3 ATV2 (each to seperate Home theater receiver)
2 Airport Express (each to seperate receiver)
    1 1TB Time Capsule
1 3TB Seagate USB 2.0 (only store iTunes media on it)
1 old Dell Inspiron 8500 Laptop

I have the TC connected to the cable modem
I have the 3TB Harddrive connected to the TC
I have the Dell Computer connected by ethernet cable to the TC
Each of the ATV2's and AE's are connected wirelessly to the TC

I use the Dell as my iTunes Server and have it mapped to the iTunes library on the 3TB Harddrive. I can stream music to all 5 devices without any fading or delays. I can stream video to any of the ATV2's with no issues. Each of the ATV2s can access the shared iTunes library with no issues.

Movies typically start playing on the ATV2's after about 10 seconds and are usually fully loaded in about 10 minutes (typical file size is 1-2GB).

I use multiple iPhones (3Gs and 4) and iPad 1 to control the Dell iTunes library when streaming music. I also have two MBPros connected wirelessly to the TC and a 320GB NAS. I only use the TC for backup of 1 of the MBP's.

He must have meant labels. Studios don't make hardly squat, and are not commissioned on sales.
I was interning at a studio in Franklin, TN (basically Nashville) when I came in early in the morning and woke up the main studio engineer (he had slept there overnight after a long session). When he got on his feet he said, "Why am I doing this?" I made my mind up right then that I didn't want to be in the same boat and decided not to work in the industry after getting my B.S.

I have a question for you:

Why does the Motorola G4 do so poorly in SPEC, while:

    The MIPS R12000 & R14000,
The Intel Pentium III, 4 & Celeron,
    The AMD Athlon,
    The HP/Compaq PA-RISC,
    The HP/Compaq Alpha,
    The Sun SPARC,
    The IBM Power3 & Power4,

all thoroughly trounce it? Only the Athlon and Pentium are x86 compatible. The MIPS R12000 only runs at 500MHz and it still kicks the snot out of the 1GHz G4. Why is that? Honestly, you don't believe Apple is at the mercy of a vast conspiracy which is the plot of SPEC and the processor manufacturers, do you?
When RC5 and Genentech tests prove that raw performance the G4 is much faster than the Pentium IV or AMD, which it does, then it basically throws out the whole idea that Mhz matters. The G4 is 4 to 5 times faster.
At certain highly specialized tasks, yes. Because these are two of the very few tasks which are ABLE with ANY amount of tweaking to perform well on the G4.
As for hand optimizing code, you don't have to do it. What you do have to do is write developers of your software if you are displeased with how poorly they optimize code, or go seek better written software.
    Great idea.

    Dear Microsoft,

I am displeased with the performance of Word v.X on my Mac (PowerBook G4 667). The cursor always seems to lag, and the application doesn't respond nearly as quickly as it does on my similar PC notebook. Could you like, fix this? Throw a little AltiVec in there, couldn't cost you more than $50,000.

    Thanks,
    Joe User
As for other factors which influence speed, let's look at the internet browsing which people constantly harp about being slower on a Mac than a PC. My 768/128 DSL on my G4/800 Flat Panel iMac is easily 5 times faster browsing webpages than my T-3 based Windows 2000 Pentium III 1 Ghz machine. I wait and wait on this Pentium III. Goes to show you processor isn't everything.
So your argument has changed from "the G4 isn't slow" to "processor isn't everything anyway?"
It is in software, and until people realize it is in the software, complaining about hardware is not going to matter a hill of beans.
Of course "it is in the software." "It" is also in the hardware. "It" is in both. Apple needs faster software. They have been improving in that area. They need faster hardware as well. They have not been improving nearly as much as they need to be in that area.
64 bit processors are so slow to be developed because so few people have made their software optimized for 64 bit operations. If people need it, they'll get it. For 99% of computer use processor speed of machines nowadays is more than adequate both on PC and the Mac. Adding peripherals though is much easier on the Mac, and installing and removing software still is much easier on the Mac without causing a crash. And ease also means less time spent. So what does speed of the machine have to do with productivity when machines like PCs are so hard to manage? Nothing! Because when it is easier, it takes less time. That's the Mac advantage.
Finally, something you said that I agree with!

the word day is used over 2000 times in the old testament, and you want to change the meaning of only six of them? Especially since the creation passages define the light as "day" and the darkness as "night", day is clearly defined as 24hrs

The six creative "days" occurred after the creation of the "heavens and the earth." That means the universe (and the earth) was in existence for an indefinite amount of time before the creative days began.

The word translated "day" can mean various lengths of time, not just a 24-hour period. Genesis 2:4 refers to God creating the "heavens and the earth" in a single day, yet Exodus 20:11 says it took six days to create the "heavens and the earth." By calling light day and darkness night, it's actually showing that only a portion of a 24-hour period is defined by the term "day." When the sun comes up at your house and then goes down, does that equal an entire day, lasting 24 hours? Psalms 90:4 says that a thousand years to man is merely a day to God. So how can you logically conclude that the term "day" is strictly indicating a 24-hour period?

In the perfect world, this wouldn't be neccecary.

I would rather buy a song without DRM than with DRM,
because you have very few rights with files with DRM.
If you buy tha same CD and encode it it won't have DRM, so why do the internet music stores need to have DRM?
Since this will create big trouble for apple I find this negative.

When then day comes that most cds are copyprotected I might buy something from iTMS, but i'll never buy a DRM file unless I have no other options!

I can access the itunes store, see my photos listen my music, etc.
    What else you guys want?

If the iTV streams HD content, then it's going to be heavily compressed HD content. Depending on the quality of the compression, it may look great on your flat panel and it may look just okay, we'll see.

That's why I put the "EDIT" in my above post. Thanks. :)

One thing that got me was that you cannot make apps fill the screen without dragging and resizing. You can only resize from the bottom right corner. No real other annoyances for me that I can think of.

That is being dealt with in Lion... you'll be able to resize on all edges.

I was in the same situation as you OP until some 4-5 years ago, when I was introduced to mac through work. I was stubborn and went through the whole "pc is equal to mac and cheaper" rubbish :)
But this also colors me in relations to noticing bad things about OSX.

I agree with the window resizing thing. But since that's taken care off... well.

To be honest I think you need to consider the positive sides as well. Things like not having a visible program folder with all sorts of nice files to click on. It's basically just an icon on a mac (though one that you can explore to reveal the contents).

Another thing... I never fully understood why I had to be bothered with the way a pc starts up. First the loading screen with hardware checks and what not. Then the black screen, then the windows loading screen and if one had it enabled, the login screen, and then the whole preparing of the desktop area to start up services and so on.

Compared to OSX, that is just too much and not being a programmer etc. I couldn't care less with all that initial info the boot screens on a pc gives me.

What you wont like about switching is the extremely closed univers of Apple. You sync items to a specific computer instead of having a free roaming device that can sync anywhere. Crist it's easier to copy files from my work iMac to my HTC phone than to my mates iPhone... ??!!

One thing to add with Apple universe is that I think they are working their way towards an even tighter app store. In the future I could easily see something similar to that Sky idea where you don't own the app but a license to access the online contents :S I think that will take longer to catch on in the pc universe.

Regarding browsers... I work with FF all day. But at home I was used to Explorer 8. I really like Explorer better than FF. Can't explain why, I just feel FF is heavier now to use than IE is. Also it seems like either FF or OSX requires more addons to use the same websites and services than IE on my pc does.

Folders... I'm so used to the whole disk drive with subfolders, fx. E: and then a folder for every little thing I've got.
The OSX system while probably the same, feels different. Best explained by:

OSX: 2-3 cabinets with several drawers and in the drawers are subfolders.

Windows: 1 cabinet, 1 drawer, lots of subfolders. (unless one partitions ones drive :) )

But all in all, I'm really really happy that I switched. My new MBP feels stable, OSX looks nice (I even geeked out and changed the looks on my folders etc :P), and it allows me to concentrate on what is important, and that is not tweaking (I'm not 15-18 anymore), it's getting work done and get it done smoothely.

In general its only about adjusting to a new setting.

i really don't understand all the people in NYC who have dropped calls multiple times a day.

i live in brooklyn, ny and work in manhattan. i have NEVER experienced the amount of dropped calls as some people on macrumors (who live in the nyc area) have.

i want to know how many calls for those who have all these "problems" with AT&T make a day. i do not have a land line, so my iphone is the only phone i have. i have owned an 1st gen iphone and i have had a 3Gs for almost 1 year.

i make, on average, about 5 - 20 calls a day. i may experience a dropped call or a call that didn't go through about 3 - 5 times PER MONTH.

the only annoyance that i have experienced more often than i'd like has to do with visual voicemail. sometimes, when i try to play my messages via visual voicemail, it never connects. so i have dial my iPhone's # and check my messages the old school way. but that doesn't happen that often.

for all those people who have dropped calls every day, are your iPhones jailbroken? i am not sure that would have anything to do with it, though.

First of all, I did study physics before, but this is not my area eventhough I work in research. But I do know this, the actual causuality between the deterioation of the ozon layer and global warming is very complex.
The experts in this area all agree on CO2, caused by oxidation (burning) fossile fuel, is by far the most significant factor in the change of our climate.

The people complaining about Color going away are going to be happy with the integrated color correction and color grading, especially if it's on the level of Aperture.
From what I've read tonight was just for FCP X and info on the other apps will be released down the road. Isn't it a bit presumptuous to say that people who use Color on a daily basis won't miss it when no one has actually used FCP X yet? Maybe it will, maybe it won't be can we at least let the app get out the door before we put a crown on it's head?

I really see the new update as a perfect complement to dSLR-based video workflows. A dSLR with FCP X and its built-in color grading and correction basically means the end of all other production workflows.
Are you really suggesting that a dSLR and a product that we've only seen a brief preview of can replace everything else out there?

Agreed - no one blames the Church for the existence of pedophiles. They blame the Church for a massive, systemic coverup lasting decades during which known child abusers were allowed to abuse thousands and thousands of Children who had been placed in the care of that same Church.

I don't want them to burn in hell - they need only confess their sins and ask for forgiveness anyway. I want them to rot in jail.

Agreed, but use the proper terminology. It wasn't "abuse"; it was "rape". Child rape. The Catholic church shielded hundreds of priests from facing criminal prosecution for raping children, and then sent them on their way so they could rape more children.

This cannot be repeated too many times.

And you shall continue to enjoy it. Like Arn has stated, this likely isn't replacing any current configurations, just adding to them.

This seems really exciting. All these cores are gonna pump out some serious power. Now if they could just mash together that processor that IBM made at like 50GHz (I think they cooled it with dry ice or something) with a multi core processor they'd have something! Bring it.

It looks like both operating systems have a few advantages and both operating systems have their share of annoyances. Truth is, I'm having a hard time finding a real advantage to switching.

That's why true "switchers" are rare. Those who have a need for Windows will continue to run Windows, in a VM, via Boot Camp or on a separate Windows machine.

However many of us who live in both OSes prefer Mac OS X on a Mac where it is appropriate.

The only "advantage" is being able to use OS X for the things it is good at.

I agree with you, in general principle. When I switched to Mac, I decided to learn the "Mac way" of doing things, rather than trying to make Mac work like Windows.

That's what I mean. Making Mac OS X work like Windows is a sure fire recipe for frustration. It's not Windows. Just like Windows 7 and Vista can still confuse hardcore XP users. It's just different.

For me, I have a huge music library and letting iTunes manage it for me is a huge load off of me. I ripped all of my ~1000 CDs to FLAC with EAC as the source of my iTunes AAC library, and am in the process of converting that all to ALAC so it can live in iTunes.

Personally I'm waiting for this upgrade not for the 8 cores (it doesn't really help my kind of workflow much) but hopefully a base of 2 gig ram for less and a price drop, even a small one on the quad 2.66 and 3.0Ghz processors. Considering the Macbook Pros now come with 2 gig base it seems fairly likely.

Keep in mind the Mac Pro does not use the same type of RAM as the MBP. The Mac Pro uses FB-DIMM technology which is much more expesnsive, so as a result, I would disagree with you and say that it is not very likely we will see 2 GB as the base RAM configuration in the new Mac Pros - not without the extra cost being compensated for in some manner.

In my short time serving in the Canadian military, I had not seen this. There was a rather flexible chaplain who served the religious needs of several faiths but most soldiers were left to stew in their own thoughts.

Well…we can argue whether Canadians support a real military but we don’t have to go there. :p

All I’m saying is that any respectable military has to prepare for sending a large group of soldiers into known suicide missions. This is what “cannon fodder” is. Sometimes you can’t hide it from the warrior. Sometimes they WILL KNOW that they will die. But this is absolutely necessary to purposely sacrifice their lives in order to achieve a strategic goal…or even victory. It’s much easier if these warriors are imprinted with the idea of “god and heaven”.

Now, in these stupid overwhelmingly “crushing an inferior force” type of wars we’ve been engaged in, perhaps these situations don’t come up as much. Or if they do, you can hand pick a couple of “zealots” to do the job. But if there was a “real war”, like for example, if oil gets scarce and Europe turns on each other… Don’t laugh. If the “middle east” turn on each other all the time for oil, it can happen to “the west” too. You would be real arrogant to think that you are so much “better” than them. And if you ARE that arrogant about being a “sophisticated Westerner” think about China…or Russia.

Hey, maybe our fighting force will be so robotic one day that it doesn’t matter. War will become an ego contest between engineers and no blood will be shed. But until the technology becomes reality, we still need cannon fodder capability for potential tight situations. ;)

Ugh... you guys speak as if you are all full-time film editors...

For what it's worth, I'm a film production major...

ROTFL!! Sorry, I couldn't help but laugh! Start burnin' them bridges early, son!!

Looks cool, but I'm on the fence about it all. It's chump change and probably a fun tool to play with. I don't see it replacing some of the larger suites. It's 'pro' editing for the masses but I'm sure many will keep their Adobe and AVID tools around for more orgranized productions.

    Cheers!

Heck, I work in an office in the flatiron district, and on my work iPhone, it is literally an act of god if your call lasts longer than two minutes. I get slightly better times in Brooklyn (Prospect Heights), but I'm averaging about 5-6 dropped calls during the day. Sluggish data speeds in Midtown Manhattan.

Strangely, my (personal) Verizon Blackberry has never had a problem anywhere in NYC. Hmm

i work in the flatiron district too. on 5th ave around 19th st.

i believe that you have issues with your iPhone but i am baffled as to why i have never experienced the amount of problems that many have here in NYC. don't get me wrong, i feel lucky i haven't had as many dropped calls.

That's a real shame and I hope that improves for you. I am proud that we appear to be more open minded on this side of the pond. I have had plenty of people disagree with me, but we can agree to accept our differences.

I was once pointed to an interesting indication of the difference in culture. In the USA I believe the $1 bill contains the phrase "In God We Trust". In the UK, we have Charles Darwin on our currency! He appears on the 10 note and a recent 2 coin. The 2 coin changes fairly regularly though.

The God thing is mainly just a way to fight communism in people's mind. It works well among with the propaganda that communism takes away your religion and freedom.

So you want to go to University? You must be an 'incompetent, work-shy liberal' like me.

Perhaps it was too much to hope for that students would be granted a well-earned reprieve from the tireless onslaught of smear campaigns and foam-flecked witch-hunts in the press following the infamous Millbank Protest over tuition fees.

After all, they've had their tuition fees trebled by a government that promised to abolish them altogether, they're facing in excess of £22,000 in debt and the job market's drier than a tinder box in a drought.

To top all of that, the right-wing media and the fool-hardy work mules up North are now practically queuing up to put the boot in to these 'incompetent, work-shy liberals' who test public opinion in that most pernicious of ways - by spending their 'hard-earned' tax money on education and self-betterment. As if the drive to succeed at anything other than a farm or office job is a character flaw in this day and age!

Almost every week it seems, there's a new study conducted by a nameless, self-important 'researcher' that aims to shed some light on the many and varied problems caused by undergraduates in the currently disastrous economic climate.

The findings of these egregious reports are almost always contradictory, and are seldom flattering. Students are either over-qualified or under-qualified; know-it-alls or know-nothings; too specialist or too broadened; too desperate or too lax.

Theirs is truly a story of disaster, for they can do no right. Everything and nothing is their fault, and all at the same time. If they immerse themselves in their degrees and achieve standout grades, they are accused of lacking life experience and 'people skills' - that's flowery PR talk for flashing a mega-watt smile and treating customers like autistic children.

If they choose to balance their degrees with part-time bar work or volunteering, they're summarily accused of not trying hard enough academically.

It's a catch-22 of sorts, and thousands of students are now emerging on the other side of education with a myriad of unrealistic and unrefined prospects. Furthermore, their qualifications are rapidly losing gravitas in a society bent on the work ethic and the quick starter. The future for graduates looks bleak indeed.

But whose fault is that, exactly? It surely cannot be attributed to them. They work hard, for the most part, and leave University with a genuine desire to make an honest living and get by in the world.

The pressure they face upon graduating is often crippling, as thousands apply for similar positions in an over- saturated job market. Couple that with the tens of thousands of pounds they are burdened with in debt, and you've got a recipe for absolute disaster.

In this instance you'd expect the big employers to display some compassion and sympathy. Of course a three year degree in Business Management isn't going to cut it alone. Everybody needs hands-on experience, and this is where they could step in to help and shoulder some of the burden.

Yet many of the industry giants are now giving graduates the cold shoulder and are opting for the younger school leavers instead. Their reasons - that leaving education at 16 demonstrates a desire to work and a recognition of the need to start early in business. They appear to have nothing but searing contempt for those in Higher Education, who they see as wet and work-shy.

It's perplexing to say the least. At my old comprehensive school, situated in one of the poorest regions of the UK, the only ones who were short-sighted enough to leave full-time education after the GCSE examinations were the bone-idle bruisers with learning difficulties.

To me, it was utterly preposterous to even contemplate leaving education behind at such a young age and settling for a dead-end job or a hands-on apprenticeship that didn't lead anywhere. Graduates earn on average three times more than their peers who did not attend college or University - so we're told - and that seemed like the more profitable route to take.

But then there's the tired and pejorative assumption that only bleeding-hearts liberals will apply to University in the first place. Those with double-barreled surnames who come from large red-brick Manor houses in London and Sussex. Those who are so dreadfully terrified of dirtying their manicured nails or Ralph Lauren polo-shirts in an actual (whisper it!) job that they'd rather spend John Q Tax-Payer's money on a bogus degree in Social Studies.

To those who are stable and smug in their employment, students are endlessly and unthinkingly grouped under the umbrella of 'left-wing elite', and are vilified instead of revered for a whole plethora of shortcomings that are largely fabricated by those who don't possess a single shred of intellect to smear those who do.

Among these imagined slights is their apparent inability and unwillingness to work. They are frequently told to stop prancing behind the glittery curtain of educational make-believe and get firmly in the real world. They are also chastised for 'wasting' tax-payers money. This, despite the fact that many of these 'dithering half-wits' and 'wasters' will go on to lead the fight against Cancer and keep us safe from harm in the legal professions. As if spending tax money on this is the equivalent of pissing money up a wall instead of investing in a secure and stable future!

For these people who have never known the enormous burden of academic debt and who grew up when jobs were in plentiful supply, to go to University is to cop-out. Instead of demonstrating intellect and a willingness to achieve, it is seen as a way of ducking vocational responsibilities for a further three or four booze-saturated years.

The long term victims, though, are the employers. Although they may not think it or admit it now, they will soon be left with a sea of under-qualified job candidates who will cost thousands of pounds to train and discipline.

In their tireless pursuit of the young, the dumb and the gullible, eager graduates are being cut down mercilessly before they can even begin to put back in to the national money pot.

Very soon we'll be witnessing the ugly fallout, as employers stamp their feet, burst in to tears and accuse the nasty students of not playing along in their dangerous game of double standards, in which the best candidates are allowed to slip through the net because they're entering employment at 21 instead of 16.

This slight difference of 5 years gives University graduates the edge over under-qualified job applicants who believe themselves, somewhat mistakenly, to have had a head start in the working world. A student's commitment to further learning, and subsequent higher earning, should be attractive to employers. Instead they face public humiliation and vocational alienation as employers and big industry bosses bite the hands that feed them.

Universities are places where people go to better themselves and strive for the top-end careers and vocations, not dire blue-collar holding pens for life's victims. We should lay off the counter-productive critique and give them a chance to prove their worth in an economy that can't afford to do without them.
