In China, doing the crime means serving the time… as a MMO gold farmer Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:57 PM PDT It’s almost as wacky as the tampons with maggots in them. Okay, it’s not that wacky, but fairly close. And unfortunately, it sometimes means that no crime was ever done to begin with… In America, when prisoners have nothing better to do, you put them to good use. Either making license plates or being customer services representatives for Delta. Meanwhile in China, they force prisoners to be gold farmers for MMOs. Liu Dali is a prisoner at Jixi labor camp. Currently 54 years old, he was thrown in the clink for three years in 2004 for raising a ruckus about corruption in his hometown. Unfortunately, his story is hardly unique in his homeland. Anyhow, in addition to performing manual labor, he also had to endure the virtual kind. In an interview, Liu states: “Prison bosses made more money forcing inmates to play games than they do forcing people to do manual labour… There were 300 prisoners forced to play games. We worked 12-hour shifts in the camp. I heard them say they could earn 5,000-6,000rmb a day. We didn’t see any of the money. The computers were never turned off.” It gets even better: “If I couldn’t complete my work quota, they would punish me physically. They would make me stand with my hands raised in the air and after I returned to my dormitory they would beat me with plastic pipes. We kept playing until we could barely see things.” Gold faming is a very big business in China; statistics state that 80-90% takes place there. It’s one thing to consider citizens slowly killing themselves in the real world so some kid doesn’t have to grin in World of Warcraft as a living, but political dissidents who are doing so completely against their will is a whole different level of f’d up.
Roger Federer stops Novak Djokovic’s win streak at 43 Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:26 PM PDT Novak Djokovic was bound to lose right? That’s what people had been saying for the better part of five months as Djokovic won tournament after tournament and remained undefeated. But that winning streak came to an abrupt halt this evening at Roland Garros when Roger Federer beat him in four sets, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. The match took an abrupt turn after the first set when Djokovic was broken early and clearly looked frazzled. He looked to his box several times in dismay and even once made the sign of the cross. He rallied in the third but given Federer’s 174-0 record after leading two sets to love in Grand Slam matches, it would have taken a Herculean effort to bounce back. Federer will now face Rafael Nadal in the finals. Something we’ve obviously seen a time or two before.
VIDEO: So, do violent games really make those who play them equally so? Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:25 PM PDT The following video, detailing various tests, attempts to answer the hotly contested question. ..
Violent Video Games Reduce Brain Response to Violence and Increase Aggressive Behavior, University of Missouri Study Finds from MU News Bureau on Vimeo. Upon first viewing, I was ready to go “well, this is certainly bullsh*t” after the first ten second alone. It’s a fact: scientists have yet to establish a definitive correlation between violent video games and violent behavior. The fact that there’s even a test to begin with somewhat validates this, otherwise, why have tests in the first place? Anyhow, the basic question being posed is if violent video games makes players less responsive to violence, and perhaps even violent themselves? The first part is a logical assumption, but still not enough to establish a link to conclusion, and the tests that are conducted do little to provide insight imho. In particular is the one in which two subjects are pitted against each other, with the loser being more aggressive when the winner blew a sound in their ear. Simply put, aggression does not inherently lead to violence. True, one can lead to the other, but they’re still very separate. Hell, the rise in aggression could also be a defense mechanism. And true, being defensive can lead to violence… which in turn asks us to then quantify and categorize different degrees and shades of violence. Which all of these kinds of tests are too chicken to attempt. Also, by that virtue, shouldn’t a person who is desensitized due to violent video games be less responsive to provocation? After all, isn’t it supposed to take them more to get their blood boiling? Point being, the test above do little to actually address the problem… because in their defense, it’s difficult to really pin down, let alone completely articulate. I have a pal whose a cop, and he is witness the most heinous things imaginable… to the point that stuff that would make anyone else seriously pass out has zero effect on the guy. Does that increase the chance of him adopting behavior that leads to actions whose results he constantly encounter? Of course not, that's ridiculous. Thankfully the person who was driving these tests, the associate professor of psychology at the University of Missouri, Bruce Bartholow, came to the logical conclusion that no correlation can be established due to various outside factors. Which to be honest, should be readily apparent to almost anyone, though I guess these tests hopefully drove that message home to those who still don’t understand, questionable reasoning behind said tests not withstanding.
January Jones is Emma Frost, in her underwear Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT ![]() Nope... still not gonna smile... In case you weren’t aware, January Jones stars as Emma Frost in the movie X-Men: First Class (you know, the movie she was doing when she got knocked up). Apparently part of her role involved her doing things in just her underwear. Do I smell a blockbuster?! Probably not. But at least the people who made the movie knew that the best way to distract us from January’s joyless demeanor was to have her do things in nothing but a bra and panties. It’s the age-old Hollywood movie trick, also known as “movie magic,” if you will. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
